Now that it’s chilly outside, are you ready to tackle your indoor flooring projects? Let’s start with refinishing your beautiful hardwood floors.
You may need to rent two machines to get your wood floor perfectly sanded. Measure the room before you go. Knowing the total square footage will help the experts at Rental Country estimate how many sanding belts and discs you’ll need.
Make sure you prepare your floors for this project, this can take longer than you might expect, so prepare your floors before you pick up your rental equipment.
Not only do you have to remove all the furniture and cover doorways with plastic, but make sure you cover or plug air vents to keep dust out of ducts. Its also a good idea to turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat; to help stop dust traveling around your house through the ducts.
You are also going to want to remove all window coverings and pictures from the walls to avoid getting them dirty.
Be sure to do a final check of the flooring and nail down any loose boards with finish nails.
Once you’re ready to get started make sure the machine is unplugged as you attach the abrasive sleeve and add the dust bag. Plug in the machine and you’re ready to go! Start moving before you lower the drum and never stay in one place with the drum lowered.
A good place to start is halfway between the front and back walls of the room on the left side. Then work your way forward. Gently lift the drum before reaching the wall and gradually lower it for the return pass.
It’s important to empty the dust bag when it’s about a third full. Never throw away rags that have paint, stain, or solvent on them in the same bag as the floor dust as it can become a fire hazard.
Now it’s time to get the edger. Follow each phase of drum sanding with edging using the same grit of sandpaper. For suggestions on which type of sandpaper to use, ask the experts at Rental Country.
Sand the room in a clockwise direction, the same as the edger spins. Start from the point where the drum sander stopped and work your way toward the wall. Sanding this way ensures a smooth, blended finish.
The experts at Rental Country will be happy to show you how to use your floor sanding equipment before you take it home and get to work!
