No Plumber Needed! Rent a Sewer Auger!

sewer auger

If you’ve ever called a plumber to have your sewer line cleared, you know how much it costs. Though cleaning out your sewer line is not the most fun way to spend an afternoon, renting a sewer auger and clearing your own drain is not only doable but significantly cheaper than calling for help.

Ready to put a sewer auger to work in your home? Call Rental Country at (866) 692-7510 and rent the right equipment for the job!

A home sewer line is the drain pipe that runs from the bottom of your main waste drain, under the yard, and into the city sewer main. A warning if you have a much older home – you may want to call in a professional due to lack of a cleanout or access hole.

There is an access or cleanout hole in your sewer line that is intended to use a sewer auger to clean it out. You will usually find this in the basement or crawlspace.  Your cleanout may be a threaded plug at the end of a fitting or a short length of pipe attached to the main drain. It may also be outdoors. Look for a plug or small manhole-like cover that seals the top of a sloping pipe. The pipe will lead down through the ground and into the sewer drain pipe.

Make sure you have the right tools for the job:

Sewer augers, or sewer snakes, are available at Rental Country. This power tool consists of a 50 to 100-foot cable wrapped inside of a metal cage-like spool, which is turned by an electric motor. The auger frame has two wheels, so you tip it back and roll it. At the end of the cable is a curved, two-pronged cutter head that rotates along with the cable to cut through the clog.

Rental Country also has commercial units to rent with several different attachments for different situations if needed!

Don’t forget work gloves that you can wash or throw away, rags, and a wrench or screwdriver for the cleanout.

The first step is to remove the cleanout plug or cover. However, if your drain is backed up well into the house, opening the cleanout can release the backed-up sewage. You need to wait until the drain is empty above the cleanout before removing it.

Set the auger down in a convenient location. Pull out the cable and feed it into the pipe a few feet, then press the pedal to start spinning the cable and cutter head. As the auger spins, pull the cable from the spool and feed it one foot at a time into the drain.

If the cable meets resistance, it could be a bend or a clog. Either way, don’t force it. Back off the cutter head by retracting the cable a bit, then try again, because going too far or pushing too hard can break it. If the cutter gets stuck and you can’t get the cable unwound, stop the auger rotation, hit the reverse switch on the motor, then pull the cutter free before restarting.

Repeat the process until you clear the clog. Often you have to pull the cable all the way back out, running it through a rag and coiling it back into its spool cage as you go, to check the cutter head for roots and other debris. Keep the motor off when pulling back the cable.

Repeat the snaking process a couple more times to make sure you got everything. Run a garden hose down the pipe, as it will help clean the cable and clear out some debris. Run the hose for a few minutes to verify there is no longer a clog.

Sometimes you just can’t clear a clog. Could be a damaged pipe or a really big root or another stubborn obstruction. Some clogs simply require the expertise and high-end equipment of a plumber or drain specialist. Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll be able to clear the drain yourself.
